Training small groups - Identifying Training Needs

An essential part of training is to accurately identify the training need of participants. If performance in the workplace is low you need to determine whether this is due to the skills, knowledge and attitudes of the individual and not due to some other issues such as management problems or faulty equipment.

Identifying training needs will help ensure that training is required and if so that the training you will be conducting will accurately meet the needs of those participating.

To identify training need you must determine the difference between what people actually do in a job and what people should do in performing the job (desired performance).

There are many reasons why a training need may arise. Participants may:

* Not know what to do.

* Know what to do but not have the skills.

* Have the skills and knowledge but are not performing at the standard their organization requires.

* not care about work performance.
